24 May Christian Professor Explains The Need To Eliminate Christian Conservatives
State of the Union
We live in a very political world. Our country is ripping apart by the seams. We are no longer just a melting pot, we are a mad scientists’ careless chemical concoction. It seems that one wrong addition and the whole thing will go radioactive. The Church is in disarray and therefore the nation is in disarray. More and more people seem to have greater allegiance to political ideals than to God. This brings me to the point of this short article.
Are You a Conservative Christian or a Christian Conservative?
There is a difference between a Christian Conservative and a conservative Christian. Notice that in the former, “Christian” serves as an adjective to the capitalized Conservative (Conservative Christian), whereas the latter uses the lowercase “conservative” as a clarification of the primary noun “Christian” (conservative Christian)[My wife pointed out that this can make your mind spin. Look for the double capital Cs for the instance of the person who places Conservatism above Christianity]. These two versions of similar words reverse the emphasis. In the first example, Conservatism takes precedence over Christian and in the second example Christian takes precedence over the conservatism. In other words, a Christian Conservative is someone who is a Conservative first and a Christian second. A conservative Christian is someone who is a Christian first and conservative simply describes their sociopolitical leanings within their Christianity. A Christian Conservative places party values above kingdom values. This person is swayed more by the groupthink of conservatives than by their relationship with Christ. *This isn’t really about the semantics, though I believe they ultimately matter. The principle is the primary concern.
Linguistically, a conservative Christian seems barely different at first glance. Functionally, however, there is a wide chasm between the two. A conservative Christian is very different than a Christian Conservative. The conservative Christian may espouse conservative values, but only as they glorify and honor Christ. The allegiance here is to Christ, not party. The conservative Christian’s allegiance is to righteousness not rightwing-ness. Any political leanings are therefore a matter of Christ’s truth not political persuasion.
How The Shall We Respond?
1) Remove The Shackles of Your Partisan Allegiance
Of course this doesn’t mean you have to leave any particular party. It just means that your allegiance to your party should only be within the boundaries of God’s values and will. I can assure you, there is no political platform that perfectly exemplifies Christ. If you don’t find yourself questioning some of the platform’s priorities, you may want to reevaluate things.
2) Seek God’s Will Across Issues:
In order for point one to work, we have to find God’s will across issues. This will probably require some research, prayer, and conversation. It’s worth it.
3) Listen to the Other Side:
You don’t have to agree with it. But I promise you, someone that you disagree with has some piece of wisdom that could help you get closer to God’s heart. Listen. Even if 99% of what you hear is trashable, that one thing could be a game changer for you and the way you represent God as His ambassador on earth.
4) Change Your Language:
The first three points deal with belief and action, but words matter. If you are truly a Christian first, then make sure that is how you represent yourself in word as well as action!
As conservative Christians our priority is God, His Will, and His Kingdom! If we seek first the kingdom of God, all things will be added unto us – this includes political position and the strategy to see it enacted. If we seek first heaven’s perspective we are not restricted to the perspective of man. If we seek the mind of God, then God’s mind is at hand. And when God’s mind informs our politics… heaven is the limit.
